Michael Kallenberg, 26, a Royal Air Force air-traffic controller and professional athlete from Cardiff, said he was thrilled to have finished the route in just 00:31:12 - beating the previous record of 00:31:28 set in 2015, the inaugural Run Norwich.

Kallenberg said: I'm really pleased with the result and the race itself was fantastic. It was really well organised and there was a great field as well. I'll definitely be back next year.'

A total of 4,706 runners took part - another record for the race.

The near cloudless morning was close to 20 degrees and many runners found the heat and hills of the city centre challenging. But the crowds lining the route cheered the competitors over the finish line in front of the City Hall.

The field included Norwich City legend Dean Ashton, who ran despite having one of his ankles fused after an old injury he sustained playing football for England. Another former Canaries star, Grant Holt, sounded the starter horn to get the race underway.

Amy Crewe, event manager, said she was delighted with the run.

She said: 'It's been a beautiful day and the runners have all done extremely well. We've had the top three runners come in at a fantastic pace and all the volunteers have helped us phenomenally to make this a reality.'

Cat Cummings, the fifth woman across the line, was taking part for the first time.

Cummings, 39, from Mulbarton, who runs with Wymondham Athletics Club, said: 'It was hot. I was pleased to get around today. The crowds were absolutely brilliant and they really helped when you were feeling tired.'

After the race runners moved on to a 'race village' set up at Chapelfield Gardens to reunite with friends and family and enjoy a massage or a post-race beer.

The official charities for this year's Run Norwich were the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, Mind and Big C.

The top 10 men's and women's times

Good conditions and enthusiastic spectators helped make this year's Run Norwich the fastest race in the event's three-year history.

Nick Earl, who won in 2015 and 2016, could not make this year's race and made way for a new champion, Cardiff's Michael Kallenberg.
