A road in Norwich city centre has reopened after a fatal crash which saw a female pedestrian in her 80s hit by a double decker bus.

Police were called to Rose Lane shortly before 10pm on Thursday (August 8).

Norfolk police confirmed the road had reopened just after 8.40am.

A spokesperson for the constabulary said officers were no longer at the scene, and the road had been reopened to traffic and pedestrians.

Officers have issued an appeal for witnesses to the crash, which took place just after 9.50pm at the crossing near to the junction with St Vedast Street.

The road was closed between the junctions of Saint Vedast Street/Prince of Wales Road and Riverside Road/Prince of Wales Road.

The pedestrian, understood to be an elderly woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one on the bus was injured.

Police remained at the scene of the crash, near the Rooftop Gardens, this morning (Friday, August 9).

Brian Clapham, concierge at Conisford Court, on Rose Lane, said: "I didn't really know what happened. It's shocking."

He added: "It's all been shut since 10pm last night.

"The city's going to blocked all day."

Police warned motorists to expect delays and said the road would remain closed until further notice.

There were reports of residents on King Street being unable to return to their homes overnight, with some having to find alternative places to sleep.

In a tweet shared this morning, a Norfolk police spokesperson said: "Rose Lane, Norwich, remains closed until further notice following an road traffic collision.

"Expect delays - take an alternative route."

Drivers can only access Rouen Road via Riverside.

Bus services facing disruption include Simonds 1, 2; Konect 5/5A/5B/5C, 8; First 14/15/15A, 23/23A/24/24A, 25/26/26A; Our Bus 32/132.

A spokesperson for Norwich Bus Updates said: "Rose Lane is closed due to a serious collision and investigation work.

"No buses are serving Wensum House."

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dash cam footage. Police would also like to hear from any bus passengers who didn't speak with officers on scene.
