Hundreds of shoppers and staff were evacuated from Gapton Hall retail park at lunchtime today after strong winds ripped metal sheeting from one of the units, posing a hazard.

Police and fire crews made the decision to shut the out-of-town hub amid fears material could come loose and fly across the car park.

Tonight the retail park remains closed to vehicles with a police van parked at the entrance waving cars away.

However Iceland, Poundland and Halfords - which are further away from the affected area - continued trading today.

Security would be on site throughout the night to monitor the situation, he added.
