Redundant Shimpling church to host first Holy Communion in 25 years

PUBLISHED: 16:30 05 April 2012

A south Norfolk church will hold its first Holy Communion in more than 25 years later this month.

St George’s Church at Shimpling, near Diss, is to celebrate its Patronal Festival on Monday, April 23 at 10.30am, followed by wine and nibbles.

The building ceased to be a parish church 25 years ago.

The celebrant will be the Rector, the Revd J H E Roskelly.

Organiser, and former churchwarden at St Georges, Maurice Philpot, said it would be a prayer book service, and that he was looking forward to welcoming a large congregation for the special occasion.

Since it ceased to be a parish church, in 1987, the church has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust – which now cares for over 340 similar buildings throughout England.
