Recovery work is under way today after a 44 tonne lorry veered into a West Norfolk river.

Luckily the driver escaped injury following the incident yesterday at around 4.30pm at Well Creek, Outwell, near Wisbech.

The Heygates lorry was heading back to Downham Market when it is thought to have been involved in a collision before rolling into the river.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene and a fire crew from Outwell attended.

A fire service spokesman said an appliance from Outwell attended the collision 'and provided scene safety'.

The collision happened at around 4.30pm and the road opened 90 minutes later.

Police and ambulance crews also attended.

The incident closed the A1122 for a short time and traffic was backed up at one point for several miles.

A company from Lincolnshire is thought to have been asked to make the specialist recovery of the lorry from the river.
