A young motorist whose “impulsive and reckless” driving caused a crash in Lowestoft will spend nine months in jail.

Tony Colton, 22, of Victoria Road, Lowestoft, admitted dangerous driving after an accident in Corton Road on May 31 last year. He was driving his Volvo car near to Links Road when the car in front of him indicated to turn right.

Colton, who witnesses said was driving at speeds in excess of 50mph in a 30mph residential area, thought the car was turning left and pulled out to overtake it, causing a collision.

The driver and passenger in the blue Peugeot suffered cuts and bruises which took several weeks to heal and the elderly passenger has suffered regular flashbacks since the incident.

Judge Neil McKittrick said at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday that Colton's approach to driving had been “impulsive and reckless”.

Colton was sentenced to nine months in prison and will be disqualified from driving for at least 18 months after his release, and will then have to pass an extended driving test.
