Pub-goers will have the rare opportunity to insult their friends without fear of reprisal at a popular Norfolk inn for one day next month.
Landlord Simon Alper has come up with a novel way of raising money for Help For Heroes at the Lord Nelson, in Burnham Thorpe near Wells.
He is asking for people to “donate” compliments and insults – and at the compliments and insults day, on April 16, customers will be able to buy a compliment or an insult and use it as they wish.
Each will be picked out at random and cost £2 with all proceeds being donated to Help for Heroes.
The idea is in part reminiscent of Monty Python’s famous Argument Clinic sketch with Michael Palin and John Cleese, where a man pays to have a five-minute argument.
But Mr Alper said his inspiration came from a conversation in the pub.
He said: “Somebody just said a few weeks ago that they had heard a really good insult that was very funny.
“We are holding a fundraising week for Help For Heroes in April and I’d been looking for something to do on the Saturday night.
“I just thought this would be a really fun way of raising money. I’m sure the night will have a Monty Python kind of feel to it.”
He added: “We’ve had a few good ones donated to us so far and there have been a lot more insults than compliments.
“We are trying to get together a great selection of original insults and cheesy compliments for our customers to choose from on the day.
“The funnier they are the better, so if you have a particular favourite, please let us know, and help us raise lots of money for this great cause.”
The fund raising week will run from April 11 to April 17.
The Monday will feature an open rehearsal of the band Nelson’s Shantymen, which anyone is welcome to join in with, from 7.30pm.
The following night, from 8.45pm, will be a concert from Frankie Martin, singing Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and more. Mr Martin, from Nottinghamshire, will be on a tour to play 366 gigs in 366 days to raise money for Help For Heroes and this will be his 358th. There will be a darts competition from 7pm on the Wednesday and a Woodforde’s meet- the-brewer night on the Thursday when a range of Woodforde’s beers will be available.
There will be a quiz on the Friday, the compliments and insults day on the Saturday and the Lord Nelson Cricket Club’s first match of the season at 2pm on the Sunday, followed by a party in the pub.
Anyone with a compliment or an insult to donate can visit the pub, call them on 01328 738241 or e mail firstname.lastname@example.org
