A motorcyclist, 20, who died following a crash on the A1101 at Barton Mills has been named as RAF Lakenheath Airman 1st Class Darren Phillips.

Police were called just before 1.30pm on Friday to reports of a crash between a silver Skoda and a motorcycle just east of the A11 Five Ways roundabout.

The young motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where he died late last night.

RAF Lakenheath released a statement saying that the airman was a crew chief with the 48th Equipment Maintenance Squadron and had joined in July 2014.

Col Robert Novotny, 48th Fighter Wing commander, said: 'It's a sad day for the Liberty Wing, especially for those who knew this airman, and for his brothers and sisters in the 48th EMS.

'I ask that you join me in keeping this airman's family, and all those who knew and loved him, in your thoughts and prayers.

'This loss has been felt across our wing. Right now, we're focused on supporting Darren's family, as well as the airmen he worked and lived alongside here at Lakenheath.'

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. If you can help call Suffolk Police by dialling 101 and quoting CAD 217 of Friday, October 2.
