Sailing club member Peter Johnson died yesterday after going into cardiac arrest on Gorleston beach.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance, paramedics, a volunteer critical care paramedic from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) and local St John Ambulance helpers were called to the seafront at 2.45pm yesterday after a man, named locally as Peter Johnson, became unwell at a sailing event.

Mr Johnson, who was in his 50s, was treated at the scene by the SARS paramedic and paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service. He was taken to the James Paget University Hospital, but sadly later died.

A well-known member of both Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sailing Club and the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club, Mr Johnson was a race officer at yesterday's event. It is believed he was coming ashore when he became seriously ill.

The club said he died from a suspected heart attack.
