It was a quacking good night as the weird and wonderful ducks which went head to head in a race down the River Wensum went under the hammer.

And people were happy to run up a bill at the event, because auctioning off of the plastic ducks meant thousands more pounds were raised for the charity Break.

Ducks such as Queen Elizaduck, Captain Duck Rogers, Carmen Miranduck and 007 James Pond were among those which were auctioned off.

Businesses and local people bid for the ducks in the annual auction at the Maids Head Hotel in Tombland this evening.

The duck which fetched the most was one called Winter is Quacking, by artist Jeni Lawes, which went for £350.

In total £6,591 was raised on the night.

The Grand Norwich Duck Race took place over the bank holiday weekend at Fye Bridge next to the Ribs of Beef pub and had already raised £64,000 for the charity before the auction.

Businesses pay £100 to sponsor a duck and decorate it for the popular event - this year's race was won by the Alan Boswell Group's Black Swan.

Anthea and Roger Cawdron, from the Ribs of Beef pub, said: 'Never in a million years did we think that this little idea six years ago, as part of Norwich Inns charity of the year for Break, would grow into this amazing family event raising much needed funds to support Break's work.

'Each year the artistry gets bigger, better and more extreme, we love it.'

Sarah Bunn, senior fundraiser at Break, said: 'This year's Grand Norwich Duck Race and auction has exceeded all expectations.

'Thank you so much to everyone who got involved.

'We are already looking forward to next year - Sunday, August 26, see you there!'
