Youngsters from Snettisham Primary School joined members of the parish council as guests of honour at the launch of the Co-op’s new foodstore in the west Norfolk village, which opened following a £600,000 investment.
The Lynn Road store has created 20 new jobs and will have a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas and essentials. It will also feature an in-store bakery, and car parking.
The appointment of a community pioneer, Ben Rayner, will underpin the Co-op’s commitment to contributing to local life. He will work to foster involvement in community activities, from fundraising to working with charities, schools and voluntary organisations.
Store manager Matt Thorogood added: “We are delighted to have made such a significant investment in Snettisham, and we are thrilled with the response. Opening the Co-op’s newest store is an exciting time for the whole team and we will be working to establish the store as a community hub, a real asset locally - we are looking forward to serving Snettisham.”
There will be offers and promotions in and around the new store to mark its launch.
The store has been built on the site of the former Compasses pub, which has been closed since 2010.
The pub became famous following the murder of its former landlady, Becky Thorpe. Miss Thorpe’s partner, landlord Michael Tucker, is serving a minimum term of 22 years behind bars for murdering the 28-year-old on March 9, 2010.
