A prisoner was found hanged in his cell at HMP Norwich and died despite attempts to revive him, an inquest has heard.
The opening of the inquest into the death of Joe Colin Bartlett heard he had been unemployed and a serving prisoner at HMP Norwich when the discovery was made.
The 36-year-old, who would have celebrated his birthday tomorrow (April 13), was originally from Colchester and was found in his cell in April 5.
Jacqueline Lake, senior coroner for Norfolk, said the circumstances leading to his death were that he was 'found in his cell with a ligature'.
'Attempts were made to resuscitate him which were unsuccessful, and death was declared at 3.19pm.'
The medical cause of death was given as hanging, after Mr Bartlett was officially identified by a prison officer.
The full inquest into his death will be held on November 23, 2017 at Norfolk Coroner's Court.
