More than 4,600 determined women braved mud, sweat, and tears as Cancer Research brought fundraising event Race 4 Life - Pretty Muddy 5k to Norwich for the first time.

The women, who ranged from 14-year olds to pensioners, battled through a 5km run at Earlham Park complemented by obstacles such as muddy hurdles, tunnels, and nets to crawl under, before participants whizzed down a mud-slide to finish the race bathed in sludge.

Rachel Parratt, area event manager for Cancer Research, said the charity hoped to raise around £165,000 from the day.

She said: 'This is the biggest Race 4 Life we have held in East Anglia.

'Around 2,000 women signed up before we had even started marketing the event.

'We've really enjoyed holding the race and now we just need to remind people to return their sponsorship forms.'

Marie Sharman, 40, of Taverham, took part to raise money in honour of her uncle, Roger Newman, who has prostate cancer.

She said: 'There has been a really good atmosphere.

'We were freezing cold when we started the race, but once we got into it we forgot about the temperature.'

Also racing in Marie's team were Julie Howes, 40, of Taverham, who ran for her aunt Pat Parry, and Paulette Solomon, 57, of Drayton, who lost both her partner Peter Solomon and cousin Lorraine Hedges to cancer.

Another team consisted of Bungay Pool and Gym members Julia Wynd, 59, Mel Saunders, 44, Sharon Johnson, 40, and Lindsey Husband, 40.

Mrs Wynd, of Wenhaston, Suffolk, whose husband has blood cancer, said: 'It's great to do something with a group of ladies, that's why this event is so popular.'

The event will be held in Norwich again next year.

Volunteers at the event were members of Norwich Sea Scouts, Norwich Air Training Corps, Norfolk and Suffolk 4x4 Response, First Group, konectbus, and St John's Ambulance.
