A postcode lottery for Norfolk in the trial of a new 'Millennial' 26-30 railcard will be fixed after patches in availability were found.

Last month Greater Anglia rolled out the new initiative as a trial, ahead of a national launch of the scheme later this year.

The digital only railcard gives passengers a third off rail travel anywhere in the country, and is available for only a year as part of the trial.

But after the scheme went live on December 6, some customers found they were not eligible despite fitting the criteria.

Customers around Great Yarmouth, Hemsby and Bungay have been unable to apply for the new railcard, which was advertised as being available for anyone living in East Anglia between the ages of 26 and 30.

Greater Anglia said the problem will now be fixed after it was raised with them.

A spokeswoman for the company said: 'It was brought to our attention that those living in postcodes NR29, NR31 and NR35, in the Greater Anglia area, have been unable to sign up for the digital Railcard.

'This has now been updated. We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.'

Around 10,000 people across East Anglia are eligible for the card, which launched just weeks before the steepest rail fare rise in five years was announced. From yesterday, rail fares rose by an average of 3.4pc.

The Government uses the previous July's Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation to determine increases in regulated fares - 3.6pc in 2017.

A Number 10 spokesman said the way fares were calculated was kept 'under review', but pointed out that the RPI measure of inflation is used across the industry.

'RPI is used to account for inflation in the cost of running train services and is used to index charges, such as Network Rail charges for using the track,' they said.

'But Government carefully monitors how rail fares and average earnings change and keeps the way fare levels are calculated under review.'

He added: 'We understand that people are concerned about increases in the cost of their rail tickets and the cost of living and we are taking action in those areas.'
