A modern-style square post box has been stolen from a Norfolk village location after thieves cut through the wooden post it was attached to.

PC Christian Newbery said he had never known a post office box to be taken in his 12 years in the service.

'It was such a part of the countryside scene on a narrow road near Saham Lodge between Shipdham and Saham that nobody realised it had gone until someone wanted to use it. It's certainly a very unusual theft and it is not known what contents was in the box ,' he said.

The red box was stolen between 12.30pm on May 15 and 8am on May 17.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said the disappearance of the box was being investigated. Customers with concerns about mail in the box at the relevant time should contact Royal Mail Customer Services on 08457 740740 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.

Anyone with information about the stolen box is asked to contact PC Newbery on 0845 456 4567 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
