This year's Poppy Appeal was the best ever in the Downham Market area.

British Legion chairman Horace Cross said more than 25,000 was collected.

'I would like to thank everyone who helped us, in any way, to achieve such a magnificent result,' he said.

'I know I do not need to remind anybody of the debt we owe, not only to those members of the armed forces presently serving their Queen and country wherever that may be but also to their friends and families who have to suffer the heartache of separation and sadly sometimes much worse.'

Mr Cross said the total did not include the amount collected by the legion's Terrington St John sub-branch. Organisers Arthur and Mary Whitear are standing down after many years' service.

'We owe them a huge debt of gratitude for all the support they have given the legion over the years,' said Mr Cross.
