Campaigners are mounting a new push to get a roundabout built at a junction on the edge of Cromer.

They want Norfolk County Council to take action to improve safety at the Felbrigg Road turning off the Cromer to Holt Road.

The junction often gets snarled up, with drivers waiting for an age to turn right onto the main road near Felbrigg Hall, and tailbacks holding up cars heading to the coast.

And, though a council spokesman said accident levels were 'not unduly high', campaigners said there were lots of 'unreported shunts'.

Steps to Safety campaign members John Andrews and Brian Ridd live near to the junction. Mr Andrews said: 'One of the first things we want to do is gauge opinion – to find out how many people support the case for a roundabout at this junction.'

He said the problems were exacerbated because Felbrigg Road and nearby Hall Road had become a 'rat run' for people wanting to get to Cromer.

Mr Andrews added: 'We've been told that there have only been two reported accidents there in a number of years. But we think there are lots of shunts that are not reported.'

Mr Ridd said: 'We had a meeting a while ago, where Norman Lamb was present, and everybody agreed that there should be a roundabout. We have also done a survey of local residents, and 84 out of 92 were in favour of the roundabout. But the interest in a roundabout is far wider than just local residents.'

Despite their determination, the initial response from the county council is not encouraging.

A council spokesman said: 'The current accident record at the Holt Road/Felbrigg Road junction is not unduly high and does not justify intervention at this time. However, we will continue to monitor the number of accidents at the junction and take further action as necessary.'
