Poll: Is October 20 too early for a fireworks display?

A north Norfolk parish council has organised its annual bonfire and fireworks display more than two weeks ahead of the traditional date of November 5.

And while most communities will be celebrating the big day during the weekend before, Blakeney Parish Council has decided to host its display as early as this month.

The village's annual end of season Bonfire and Fireworks Event 2012 will take place on October 20, amid fears of high tides.

Parish council clerk Tracey Bayfield said the event would be 'only a little earlier' than previous years because the tide had worked against them this year.

'We normally hold the event during the end of the school half term,' she said.

'And although I think it will have an affect on the numbers who come to the event, at the end of the day we call it an end of season event as it's as much for the local people as it is the tourists.'

Mrs Bayfield added that by not bringing the date forward it would have been 'a gamble not worth taking' in case the high tides prevented the fireworks being lit.

The display will be held on the Carnser Car Park, at Blakeney Quayside.

There will be a barbecue from 5pm, the lighting of the bonfire at 7pm and the fireworks display, put on by Premiere Fireworks, at 7.30pm. There will also be hot food, refreshments toffee apples, rides, a tombola, glow sticks, a musical organ from Thursford, and free car parking at the village hall.

This year's chosen beneficiary is Blakeney Primary and a group from the school will assist with the event on the evening.
