A rallying call has been sounded for people to attend a meeting tonight to reject proposals for 166 homes on the edge of Hunstanton.

Members of the Hunstanton and District Civic Society have called for residents to voice their concerns about Hopkins Homes building a housing estate west of the A149 off Redgate Hill, on the southern approaches to the town.

John Maiden from the society has said that people who live near the proposed Butterfield Meadows development, worry that it would overlook their homes and increase congestion on the main coast road.

Mr Maiden said: 'For 33 years I have lived near the A149 and I have seen the traffic building - this would make it worse. I am hoping that people will come to the meeting and have their say and that members of the town council will come and listen.'

But Hunstanton Town councillor Anthony Boardman agrees that the development should not be built.

'Its the access,' said Mr Boardman.

'We do not want more traffic going through Harrys Way which leads into Princess Drive. There are a lot of elderly people who live on this estate who are concerned about the amount of traffic, whether it be on foot, cycles or vehicles. The A149 gets chock-a-blocked, it would be a rat run to Heacham.'

However fellow councillor, Christine Earnshaw said that the town is in desperate need for affordable housing. She said that young people cannot afford to live in the seaside town.

She said: 'The town needs to grow economically, we need starter homes for our younger people. At the moment, people who are working there have to travel from quite a distance.'

Ms Earnshaw did admit she is concerned about the access but is confident the Highways Agency and West Norfolk Council would come up with a solution.

She said: 'We don't have all the answers but I recognise the town needs to develop and it is the professionals job to sort that.'

The meeting will be held at 7.30pm tonight at Smithdon High School, Hunstanton, in the main hall.
