A series of road safety improvements are to be made across the county, with more than £800,000 to be spent across more than 100 schemes.

Flashing speed notices, improved crossings and footpaths and bus shelters are just some of the new features to be funded, after county councillors unanimously approved its parish partnership programme for 2018/19.

Parishes across the county were encouraged to submit bids for funding to improve road safety, with all but six approved.

Norfolk County Council will now provide £411,000 towards the long list of improvements - published in this newspaper on Tuesday, March 13 - with town and parish councils responsible for raising the remaining costs.

Of the 144 bids submitted, the only completely unsuccessful proposals were for posts in Blakeney, traffic mirrors in Kenninghall, business signs in Martham and vehicle activated signs in Old Catton.

There were also unsuccessful bids for village gateways in Stoke Ferry and signs in Walpole, though both these bids received advice on how to modify them.

Members of the council’s environment, development and transport committee were unanimous in approving a report presented, which detailed almost 140 successful applications.

Martin Wilby, the committee’s chairman, had said: “This is a fantastic way of working with all of our town and parishes across Norfolk to get projects done and improvements made.”

Terry Jermy, county councillor for the Thetford division, said: “I have always been a big supporter of parish partnerships and see them as easy means to address small problems.”

The Parish Partnership scheme was first launched in September 2011. At this time it offered up half the cost of successful bids from an initial £100,000 fund.

As part of this line of bids, vehicle activated signs will be added to Acle and Coltishall, signs displaying motorists’ speeds will appear in more than 40 locations and a bus shelter in Brancaster costing £33,000.

There will also be 20mph wig wags - signs outside schools which flash at motorists break a 20mph speed limit - erected in Blakeney, Carleton Rode, Marsham and Winfarthing.
