Draft proposals to ease congestion on Overstrand Road in Cromer could see the implementation of waiting restrictions and the relocation of a bus stop.

Residents have been calling for improvements to the busy road following months of traffic congestion.

Concerns came to a head earlier this month when an accident involving a lorry and a car blocked the road.

Residents were offered fresh hope at the time that a review of waiting restrictions could be paid for as part of the medical centre development on Mill Road.

The new fit-for-purpose medical centre will replace the nearby practice in Overstrand Road and is expected to open next March.

While lack of funding has previously held up any work on the road, James Quansah, from Norfolk County Council's community and environmental services, has written to interested parties and residents with new proposals.

He said: 'As part of the proposals for the new medical centre at Mill Road, we are proposing to implement waiting restrictions on the road and relocate the bus stop at the west of Mill Road.

'The proposals also include implementation of waiting restrictions in Overstrand Road to manage obstruction and inappropriate parking during holidays and festive seasons.'

Cromer town councillor Tim Adams said the proposals would go out to public consultation.

He said: 'It is possible changes and amendments could be made before then. Not everyone will support these proposals as there is obviously a need to preserve on-street parking for visitors and commuters.

'However, on Overstrand Road especially, there is a need to improve safety and access for residents, the emergency services, public transport and reduce congestion. This may be one of the only chances we get to do this for some time, as the costs of implementing such restrictions are prohibitive.

'Members of the public can contact me on the proposals, or come along to the next planning committee at the town council on September 14, at 7pm.'

The new GP surgery and pharmacy will share the Mill Road site with Cromer Football Club and form part of a community healthcare hub with nearby Cromer Hospital.
