The Canaries Premier League struggles compete equally with the demise of the Liberal Democrats in Norman Lamb's emotions, he has admitted.

The North Norfolk MP said the performance of Norwich City Football Club was 'all rather depressing' when questioned about the issue on the BBC political radio show Westminster Hour.

Asked which depressed him more – the performance of Norwich City Football Club or the reduction of his party to just eight MPs at the last general election, he answered: 'They compete equally probably in my emotions. It is very distressing watching Norwich City on the brink of relegation to the Championship, but also the collapse of the liberal voice in our country as a result of the election last year I think is very sad.'

Norwich City Football Club, which has a number of politician fans including former Labour MP and shadow chancellor Ed Balls, who is now its chairman, is currently in the relegation zone. Norwich's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal was their third consecutive loss on the run-in.
