People will go to the polls on May 4 to pick who should represent them at Norfolk County Council. Dan Grimmer looks at the Norwich area.

If the pollsters are to be believed, then the Labour Party nationally is facing the prospect of losing more than 100 council seats in the local elections.

But with Norwich an area where the party has tightened its grip in recent years, they will be hoping to avoid any shocks in the city.

In 2013’s county council elections they took Bowthorpe and Catton Grove from the Conservatives, Mile Cross, Sewell and Town Close from the Greens and Lakenham from the Liberal Democrats.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Thorpe Hamlet, where the last two Green councillors defected to the Conservatives.

Former Norwich South parliamentary candidate and current city councillor Lesley Grahame will be hoping her predecessors’ changes of allegiance do not deter voters from going for Green again.

A trio of current Green county councillors are not standing.

County Hall Green group leader Richard Bearman (Mancroft) and Andrew Boswell (Nelson) are focusing on parliamentary seats in Norwich South and Broadland, while Elizabeth Morgan is not standing in Wensum.

Martin Schmierer, leader of the City Hall Greens, is fighting for Mancroft, fellow city councillor Tim Jones will be looking to win Nelson, which he already holds at City Hall, while former Mile Cross county councillor Richard Edwards is standing in Wensum.

MORE: Which candidates are standing in the Norfolk County Council elections and who should you vote for?
Labour came within just under 160 votes of taking Wensum last time and Kim Clipsham will be keen to narrow that gap further.

Former County Hall leader George Nobbs aims to hold the Crome ward he won in 2005, but Labour veterans Sue Whitaker (Lakenham) and Bert Bremner (University) are not standing.

In University division, Labour’s candidate is the only would-be councillor who can boast a string of top 10 hit albums and singles.

Dave Rowntree, drummer with chart-topping band Blur, is looking to ignite his political career, after losing out to Clive Lewis in the 2011 selection race for Norwich South.

The current political make-up of Norfolk County Council is 42 Conservative, 14 Labour, 11 UKIP and independent, 10 Liberal Democrat, three Green, three non-aligned and one vacancy.
