A senior Ukip figure has called councillors who defected to the Conservatives disgraceful, disgusting and disloyal.

Stuart Agnew, a Ukip MEP in the Eastern region who is based in Great Yarmouth, has spoken out against the seven councillors who left the party to join the Tories.

He added: 'They've let us down. It's as simple as that.'

Mr Agnew said he thinks the councillors should resign their seats so there is a by-election in those wards.

He added: 'It's up to their honour, an honourable person would.'

'We've benefitted from it, councillors coming to us. Nobody likes it but it happens'

The MEP of nearly a decade said the Conservatives were not going to be able to deliver on Brexit.

'The Conservative effort in Great Yarmouth is led by Brandon Lewis who is a Remainer.

'Brexit is becoming a shambles. There's another way for Brexit and that's to leave now and not pay them any money.

'The Conservatives are going to let Great Yarmouth down on fishing. We should be getting our fishing grounds back but apparently that's already been sacrificed.

'The problem is the arithmetic in Westminster. MPs, the Lords, and the civil service want to Remain.

'It's beginning to look very worrying. If there's no Ukip for people to vote for we're going to end up with the referendum not getting honoured.'
