Prime minister Theresa May met with a Norfolk MP in the minutes before the crucial Brexit vote over fears he might rebel.
Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman had earlier indicated he was not sure how he would vote on the question of whether parliament should get a final say on the Brexit deal.
But after meeting Mrs May he told this paper: “I’ve been to see the prime minister and received important undertakings and decided to vote to give the prime minister the authority and freedom to negotiate the best deal she can.”
Earlier in the day Mr Freeman had offered support to Phillip Lee who had resigned as a justice minister in order to oppose the government on Brexit. Mr Freeman said: “Huge respect for my good friend for making a very tough and brave personal decision to give up office to take back control of his own parliamentary destiny.”
