The Brexit Party's candidate for North Norfolk has denied an allegation accusing him of falsely reporting living in the constituency on his nomination paper.

Harry Gwynne, who wants to succeed Sir Norman Lamb as North Norfolk MP, said his paper, which said he lived at an address in North Norfolk constituency was correct, and he was registered to vote there.

When this newspaper interviewed Mr Gwynne in early November he said he lived in Brentford in London, but had previously lived in Blakeney and knew the area well.

But Mr Gwynne said this week Blakeney was his main address for a three-year period around 2014 to 2017, and he was living there again now.

He added: "This has been our family home since 2007, and I have an address in London as well.

"But [Blakeney] is where I'm living at the moment. This is a house we've owned for over a decade.

"For the past couple of years I've probably spent as much time here as I have in London."

Mr Gwynne added that he would "absolutely not" consider standing aside to allow his Conservative rival for the seat, Duncan Baker, a clearer run against the anti-Brexit candidate, the Liberal Democrat's Karen Ward.

He said: "There are a lot of people around here who would be disenfranchised if I stood down."

Mr Gwynne worked as a consultant and researcher for Vote Leave and founded 3rd Chamber, an "online direct democracy social network that allows everybody to be part of the democratic process".

MPs are not required to live in their constituency, and are even allowed to live outside the UK.

A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission said it would be up to the police to look into allegations of giving a false address.

A North Norfolk District Council spokesperson said: "We are aware that a complaint has been made about information provided in Mr Gwynne's nomination papers and we understand that the matter is now being investigated by the police".

Norfolk Police has been contacted for a comment.

Labour's Emma Corlett is also standing for the seat.
