A 21-metre broadband mast to be built in the south Norfolk countryside has been approved by planners despite objections that it would be a blot on the landscape.
Householders in Bunwell, who will be able to see the steel lattice mast next to an existing electric substation on Forncett Road from their homes, had branded the plans an 'eyesore' and unsuitable for the rural location.
Angela Edgar, from Low Common, said: 'The reason I live in this rural location is mostly because of the absence of this type of ugly structure. I don't see what this mast would achieve that the higher one at Tacolneston can not.'
However other locals wrote in support of the plans. Low Common resident Jim Lee, who works from home and relies on mobile phone and internet connection, said: 'I appreciate the masts aren't pretty and the location isn't ideal for residents' 'view', but the world moves on and phone/internet connections are becoming increasingly important for domestic and business use.'
South Norfolk Council approved the plans with a condition that the mast be removed within six months if it is no longer being used.
