Drivers have been urged to plan ahead to try to ease the disruption when a key roundabout on Norwich’s busy ring road closes next week.

The Dereham Road/Sweet Briar roundabout will be completely closed for five days, between Monday, May 28 and Friday, June 1, so the revamped roundabout can be resurfaced.

It will mean traffic will not be able to cross the roundabout, affecting the tens of thousands of motorists who use the ring road and Dereham Road. Buses will also be affected.

Council bosses have acknowledged the closure will be disruptive and frustrating, but that doing the work over half-term, when roads tend to be less busy, was the “least worst” option.

Diversions will be put in place, including via roads such as the Broadland Northway, Earlham Road, Boundary Road, Larkman Lane, Bowthorpe Road and the Southern Bypass.

John Fisher, chairman of Norwich highways agency committee, says: “Whether you’re commuting or just out and about in Norwich next week during half-term, please take a few minutes to find out more about the closure.

“This is a significant event for the city’s transport network and the decision for a full road closure has not been taken lightly.

“On balance, this approach represents the quickest, safest and most efficient way to complete the work to the best possible standard.

“I’d also like to ask people to help by spreading the word to friends and family. The more informed we are across the city, the better prepared we’ll be to keep the roads moving as well as possible during this time.

“We understand that it will be disruptive and frustrating for all those affected and really appreciate everyone’s patience while work takes place.”

First Norfolk and Suffolk bus services 23/23A, 24/24A, 21/22 and 26 buses will all be affected, as will Konectbus route five.

Last week, the Wensum Residents’ Association held a public meeting, where fears were raised that the closure would cause problems for people living nearby.

The work will mark the end of a nine-month project to build a new roundabout as part of the Transport for Norwich scheme.
