The management contractors of the pier, Openwide, have submitted a planning application to the North Norfolk District Council for free standing shields in three separate areas of the pier.

These will include one area in front of the Pavillion Theatre, and two on the left hand side of the pier.

The Cromer Town Council has raised multiple concerns over the plans as they stand currently.

These include worries over loss of crabbing areas, safety issues, and where the shields will be stored when they are not in use.

The planning document states that the shields to be placed on the Grade II listed structure will be made of white steel posts and glass.

The Pike partnership, who are the agents of the project say in their design and access statement: 'The proposal's aim is to enhance visitor experience and increase use by providing some wind protection to the existing outdoor seating areas.

'To minimise visual impact we are proposing glass screens above seated head height between white metal support posts coinciding with the centres of the original structure.'

Francis Guildea, general manager of the Pier said: 'The windshields will make Cromer Pier an even better place to visit in all weathers , allowing visitors to enjoy the amazing views over the North Sea , while enjoying the facilities offered , such as Tides restaurant and the Pavilion Theatre Bar.

'If planning permission is granted the windshields will be professionally installed, and they will be positioned in areas currently used by Tides restaurant in which crabbing does not take place.'
