The north Norfolk community has, for a long time, been discussing the proposal to bring a multi-million pound Community Sports Hub to the district.

The Community Sports Hub would be based in Cromer, and NNDC are asking members of the public for their opinion on the plans.

The purpose-built hub would feature three year round indoor tennis courts for use by the public, members of the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association and students of Cromer Academy.

The facility would also include a 25 station gym with an area for free weights and fitness, changing rooms, toilets, a reception area, a social area and viewing gallery, and a versatile space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.

As part of the process, the Council will be sharing early proposals of the facility with the local community. The event will take place on Monday, April 16 from 1pm until 8pm at the Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club in Cromer.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposed facilities, view artist impressions of the current proposals and comment on the design concept, site layout and the overall impact of the proposed project.

The project is being developed in conjunction with the CLTSA and Cromer Academy.

The main facility would be built in Cromer and would serve a wide geographical area. In addition to this, as part of the project and the proposed funding agreements, a number of satellite tennis centres have been identified in the North Norfolk district for improvements.

This ‘tennis network’ is made up of Wells Town Tennis Club, Alderman Peel High School, Fakenham Sports Centre (The Gallow) and North Walsham High School/dual use sports centre.

The Hub and additional improvements to other facilities in the district would cost almost £3.2m.

The financing model sees the council contributing 75% – around £2.4m – with a bid to the Lawn Tennis Association intended to fund the remainder.

Subject to consultation, LTA funding agreement, planning approval and construction, the hub could be open by Spring 2019.

North Norfolk District Council has appointed Saunders Boston Architects to develop the new facility.

A Saunders Boston representative will work alongside staff from North Norfolk District Council to answer questions during the consultation event. A planning application for the proposed development will be submitted in the coming weeks.

Councillor John Lee, North Norfolk District Council’s Leader and ward member for Suffield Park, said: “As the local member I’m delighted at this investment.

“As leader of the Council, I’m proud of this administration’s continued good governance that allows us to invest this money in sports facilities that will benefit the whole district, providing opportunities for everyone.”

Councillor Nigel Pearce, ward member for Suffield Park, said: “The plans and construction of the new Sports Hub in Cromer are forward thinking, adventurous, and will ultimately deliver a state of the art benefit for the whole community of North Norfolk and not just those in Cromer.

“It will be easily served by public transport, will offer facilities that will improve people’s lives and give a new scope to those that will seek to benefit from inclusion in sport for all.”

After the April 16 event there will be an opportunity for people to continue to give their written views at CLTSA until the club’s AGM on April 19, and thereafter via the North Norfolk District Council website until April 30.
