A farmer today described the aftermath of a crash in which a man died when a car rolled into a ditch.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to have been the passenger in a black Mercedes, which overturned into a drainage dyke off First Marsh Road, Wisbech, yesterday afternoon.

Police are still hunting the driver of the car, who has been named as 37-year-old Tadas Sostakas, who left the scene before emergency services arrived.

Farmer James Kooreman was working nearby when the accident happened shortly after 3pm.

“The car rolled over and went into a dyke, it was a black Mercedes,” he said. “I believe the passenger was partially ejected from the vehicle.

“When we arrived, it wasn’t many minutes later because the exhaust was still hot.

“He was partially-submerged under the water through the sun roof.”

The man, sho has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Mr Kooreman said he saw hand prints, footprints and blood around the vehicle, suggesting there was another person in the car.

The car passenger who died was a man in his 30s.

Police officers are concerned about Mr Sostakas’ welfare and would like to speak to him about the collision.

Norfolk Police believes it is likely the driver suffered injuries, although the extent and seriousness is unknown.

It is not thought anyone else was inside the car.

Police have carried out a number of searches in the area for Mr Sostakas, including foot searches within the immediate vicinity of the crash.

They have been assisted by police dogs and the National Police Air Service helicopter.

Officers have also checked with local hospitals.

Mr Sostakas was seen on CCTV leaving the scene a short time after the collision, which has been released by Norfolk Police.

He is described as white and was wearing a white and blue t-shirt with dark tracksuit bottoms, socks and no footwear. Witnesses reported seeing Mr Sostakas with blood on his top, face and hands and described his clothes as muddied.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Mr Sostakas who witnessed a man fitting that description to contact Norfolk Police on 101.
