Trains between Norwich and London were disrupted after two people died on the tracks in east London.

British Transport Police (BTP) said an investigation had been launched after two people were fatally electrocuted on the line between Hackney Wick and Stratford in the early hours of Thursday.

Railway lines were temporarily closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and some Greater Anglia services from Norwich to London Liverpool Street were cancelled or delayed.

Reports of the two casualties came in separately, but both were found to have died after suffering injuries consistent with electrocution.

The BTP was called to the first incident shortly after 1am on Thursday, following reports of a casualty on the tracks between Hackney Wick and Stratford.

Officers attended with the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second report of a casualty on the tracks close to Stratford came in at 2.31am, but this person was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Det chief insp Tim Tubbs from British Transport Police said: 'An investigation is now underway to discover what happened and how these two people came to lose their lives on the railway.

'At this time we are treating their deaths as unexplained as we make a number of urgent enquiries.'
