Police are appealing for information as they investigate the cause of a fire that ripped through a farm in Ormesby St Margaret.

The blaze broke out at Hirst Farm just before 4am on Monday, March 24, causing significant damage to barns on the site. Many pregnant ewes also had to be moved.

At the height of the blaze more than 70 firefighters from around the county battled the flames at the working farm, and a 100m exclusion zone was set up as a precaution after cylinders and asbestos were found inside the buildings.

The fiercest flames, which were extinguished within a few hours of crews arriving on scene, were kept away from nearby stables and the electrical sub-station which provides power to hundreds of Ormesby homes.

As residents woke up they were advised to keep their windows and doors closed because of the heavy smoke.

An investigation was launched into the cause and police are now working with the fire service to establish how it started, and whether it was deliberate or accidental.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or anyone with any information which could assist the investigation, should call DC Kevin Maskell at Great Yarmouth CID on 101.
