The Majestic Cinema, in King's Lynn, is looking to extend the Grade II listed building to make way for a new auditorium containing 120 seats.

Plans have been put forward to build the extension on land just off Sedgeford Lane which is currently being used as a staff car park.

The development has been designed to make the venue more wheelchair-friendly - including street-level access through a new main entrance door for disabled people as well as a disabled cubicle in each toilet area and an additional disabled toilet on the ground floor.

Plans were also submitted to extend the existing screen in the ground floor to accommodate an extra 100 seats.

A planning application made to West Norfolk council states: 'These improvements to the building will also include repairs to the existing fabric to maintain the condition of the building and ensure its long term viability.

'The proposed site for the extension is open land to the side of the existing cinema off Sedgeford Lane, which is currently used as a refuse area and temporary car park for staff.

'It is proposed that the base will be built in a brick to match the surrounding building elements.

'The new extension and internal alterations to the existing cinema will provide the town with a modern leisure facility, ensuring the viability of the cinema economically and ensuring the fabric of this prominent building will be maintained moving forward.'

Planning permission was granted in 2013 for the cinema to double in size with an extra three screens but the plans never went ahead.

The cinema, in Tower Street, has been entertaining the masses since it opened in 1928.

The iconic art deco building still boasts the intricate 17th Century Jacobean and baroque architecture, with round arch arcades and tall windows.

It is one the cheapest places in the region to watch a movie, at only £4 a ticket.

On their Facebook page, Majestic Cinema has ensured customers that the ticket prices will not go up as a result of the expansion.

If plans do go ahead then the proposed works will coincide with the cinema's 90th anniversary next year.
