Councillors have given planning permission for 33 new homes in Watton in the second phase of a development that will eventually have 79 properties.

Abel Homes received permission for phase one, with 46 homes on the site between Norwich Road and Watton Green, in 2008 and the first of these homes are currently under construction.

Yesterday Breckland planning committee members backed phase two, which will include five single-storey properties which will be used for affordable housing, by 10 votes in favour and one abstention.

Speaking afterwards, managing director Tony Abel said: 'We are obviously very pleased. We have put a lot of thought into the second phase that will incorporate some slightly larger units, and it will allow us to continue with our building programme.'

He added that work on the phase two homes, which will be built before work starts on the last of the phase one homes, is likely to begin in late autumn.
