The sweet smells of cakes have helped to raise more than 880 in memory of a Norfolk youngster who died from a rare brain tumour five years ago.

Puddings, cakes and desserts of all sorts made for a fun evening, organised by the family of Andrew Stringer, to take the total raised for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (SDBTT) Andrew Stringer Fund to over 40,000.

Organised by Andrew's sister Laura, 24, the event raised 440 on the night which will now be doubled as she works for Archant Life – based in the same offices as the EDP and Evening News in Norwich – through the Archant Gold scheme.

Held on Sunday night at their family home in Reepham, near Aylsham, the aim of the evening was for guests to make a pudding, bring it along and let everyone try out each other's culinary skills.

Digital marketing executive Laura said: 'We had about 40 people come along and there were about 20 puddings.

'I was thinking we might get about 250, that would have been amazing, so to raise 440 in just two hours really is amazing!'

Laura and her family try to hold a least two charity events a year in memory of Andrew. In June, Laura and fellow Archant colleagues undertook a sponsored bike ride.

Overall, a total of 3,006 was donated to the SDBTT Andrew Stringer Fund, with Archant again having doubled the amount raised.

Laura continued: 'This cause is very worthwhile as research into brain tumours is very underfunded. Andrew was a happy, outgoing boy who loved his life, his family and his friends.

'He was always joking and laughing and loved playing all kinds of sports, especially football, golf, tennis and swimming, he was also a very enthusiastic drummer.'

It was in August 2005 that Andrew, then just 13, was diagnosed with a grade 4 PNET (supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor) – a very rare and aggressive brain tumour.

Weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy followed and Andrew underwent five major operations, but each time the tumour returned.

In August 2006 his family were told that no more could be done for Andrew and he was sent home.

Laura added: 'Andrew faced his illness with immense courage and bravery and had such a positive outlook on life. He died surrounded by us all in the early hours of Sunday morning on November 12, one month before his 14th birthday.

'He has left us with so many wonderful memories of such happy times spent together, he was so special and we will remember him forever.'
