This stunning action picture helped to clinch a prestigious award today for an EDP photographer.

Bill Smith's photograph shows Matthew Wilkinson being dismissed during a match between Horsford and Swardeston last summer.

Today he was named news photographer of the year at the EDF Energy Media Awards ceremony at the Suffolk Showground, near Ipswich.

The judges said his portfolio of five photographs - which also included an action shot from a riot that broke out as police tried to break up a rave near Norwich on New Year's Eve 2005 - was “full of emotion”, and “captured all aspects of news photography”.

He was joined on the winner's podium by EDP business editor Chris Starkie, who clinched the business journalist of the year title for the second year running.

The awards were presented by Essex county cricketer Graham Napier.
