It may be celebrating its 90th birthday – but Watton Carnival is still set to be as bright and buzzing as ever this Sunday.

The High Street will close for the much-loved event, which sees tradition and community spirit parade hand-in-hand for a day of family fun.

And this year more than 100 pumpkins grown over the last three months are being given away as part of a scheme to get people gardening and growing their own food.

The time-honoured celebration of live music, entertainment and the town coming together promises to deliver a fun-filled, inexpensive family day out aimed at incorporating all generations and cultures.

Cheryl Clayton, a key organiser, hopes the 200 school children and expected crowds make the day one to remember for the town.

'People take pride in Watton Carnival,' she said. 'They feel the community spirit of the day.

'There aren't many towns which have a carnival like this any more, so it's a special and important thing to keep the event going.'

Staring with morning worship in Chaston Place at 11am, the rest of the day will follow with live music and entertainment, fairground rides, side stalls run by charities and organisations to raise funds and awareness for their worthy causes, and much more.

Watton Town and Breckland district councillor Keith Gilbert is a 'master gardener' ,which means he is a champion of all-things home grown.

Master gardeners offer free food-growing advice and support for local people and communities.

As part of this brief, Mr Gilbert has grown the pumpkins to give away at the carnival for people to eat – and then plant some more.

He said: 'I grew the pumpkins in a greenhouse in my garden.

'The great thing about growing your own vegetables is you know where they come from, which is so much better.

'The master gardener's stall is going to be unique. We are not taking any money from anyone – we will be giving the pumpkins away!'

The carnival parade will be lead by the carnival princess at 1pm, organised by the Watton Twinning Association.

There will also be a free attraction for young people, which has been generously sponsored by Watton Town Council.

Other sponsors includes Wayland Chamber of Commerce, Ridgeons Builders Merchants and Eastwood Catering.
