Once the ambulance arrived police, which until then had maintained single flow traffic, closed off the entire road to allow for the victim to be treated and then taken to hospital.

His condition is not known.

Flattened curb side grass indicated the substantial distance the van travelled before ending upturned in a nearside but, luckily, dry drain.

Two fire engines were called to assist with the rescue.

Just yards from where the accident happened, Cambs County Council and the Fenland Road Safety Committee have committed substantial funds to barrier improvements.

In recent years Bedlam Bridge has become a notorious accident black spot and the death five years ago of school girl Charlotte Walker prompted a massive campaign to improve road conditions in the area.

Charlotte died when the car in which she was a passenger plunged into the water.
