More than 1,500 people put themselves through their paces today as they raced through the streets of Norwich to raise money for Sport Relief.

Runners chose from one mile, three mile or six mile routes, which took them round the city's streets, passing landmarks such as Norwich Castle on the way.

Everyone from little children to grandparents took part in the fundraiser, which started outside The Forum and ended with relieved runners reaching the finishing line at Chapelfield Gardens.

Some of the less self-conscious runners donned onesies for the race, while other daft costumes included giant tiger heads and Spiderman masks.

And, for those who flagged on the route, there were musicians to lift their spirits and get them moving again, including a brass band and a group of drummers.

Among those who took part in the race were Neil and Sam Barwick, from Taverham, with their children Harry, 8, and Bryony, 6.

Mr Barwick, a teacher at Cringleford Primary School, said: 'We'd done a bit at school and we wanted to join in with the event in the centre of Norwich.

'It was great fun to get involved. We entered to do three miles and we've ended up doing two, although mummy's done all three!'

Norwich's Lord Mayor Keith Driver was at the finish line to congratulate those completing the run. He said: 'It's great to see some of the faces as they cross the line and it's been lovely to see so many families taking part. Everyone's had a really good time and it has raised money for a good cause.'

Helen Selleck, culture and events manager at Norwich City Council, said: 'It has been really good fun. We've had the serious runners doing the six miles and it's been good that we've had lots of children and families taking part as well.

'Everyone working on it has volunteered and they have put in a great shift, while the entertainers performed for free as well, so we'd like to thank them.'

A number of roads in the city centre were closed to traffic so the event could take place.

For those who preferred swimming to running, Riverside Leisure Centre hosted a Swimathon as part of the Sport Relief weekend.

More than £51m was raised for charity during the live Sport Relief television show - a total which eclipsed the previous on-the-night record.

David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Sir David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and Sebastian Coe were among the sports stars and celebrities who took part in Friday night's BBC show.
