Gorillas dressed as the Caped Crusader, decorated in images of the Norfolk coast and donning military attire are among the ingenious designs picked to be in the animal art trail set to descend upon the city next summer.

The Go Go Gorillas! trail will see a troop of uniquely decorated gorilla sculptures scattered across the city to raise funds for the children and young people's charity Break and the wildlife protection group, the Born Free Foundation.

So far about 25 organisations have signed up to sponsor a gorilla, and at the Assembly House in Norwich yesterday they got the chance for a first look at designs created by local artists. Among the first sponsors to pick their gorilla design was Quality Solicitors Clapham and Collinge, based in All Saints Green, who are going to sponsor a gorilla dressed as Batman designed by North Walsham-based artist Martin Wall.

Heather Cook, who picked the design with her colleague Tammy Parnell, said: 'We are really impressed with all the designs. They are brilliant.

'We picked the Batman design because we wanted to have something iconic and striking that everyone would recognise.'

Mr Wall, who has also been picked by the Norse Group to create a gorilla dressed as Iron Man, said he was really pleased to have some of his designs picked and he was looking forward to starting work on them.

Martin Green, Break fundraising officer and manager of the project for the charity, said yesterday's exhibition was a great start to the choosing of designs. He said of the 25 sponsors so far signed up, about half have now picked their designs – and there is still time for other organisations to become sponsors as they hoped to have 50 gorillas in the trail. He said: 'We hope as many organisations as possible will embrace the project.'
