Legendary magician Paul Daniels has said that Saturday’s magic show at Great Yarmouth’s Britannia Theatre was “one the best I have ever been on”, and he praised the town for their hosting of the biggest gathering of magicians in the UK.
The former TV superstar, also known for marrying his glamorous assistant Debbie McGee - who he met in Yarmouth - was in town with his wife to provide the climax to what has been a successful five day hosting of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (British Ring) Convention.
Daniels performed at the headline show, one of only two open to the public during the five day conference, in which more than 500 British magic acts converged to trade secrets, discuss magical developments and put on two shows for the public.
He ended the conference by having a private question and answer session with the guests at the Hollywood Cinema on the seafront.
The man who had 15 years of fame with his Paul Daniels’ magic show - which ran on the BBC from 1979 to 1994 - said: “It was a great magic show last night, really was one of the best I have ever been on.
“It is such a good place. Of course 33 and a half years ago it was where me and Debbie first met. And my family holidays used to be on the broads. We live on a river now, probably influenced by that.
“It was a great audience yesterday. I think Yarmouth is very good, I just wish they had a venue which could combine more stuff, so the convention goers could move arournd inside it, because a lot of them are quite old.
“But overall I just love Yarmouth.”
Wife Debbie said: “I have had a lovely time, really enjoyed the show last night. Yarmouth has a special place in my heart.
“This is the first time we have been back and done a show for many years.
“Yarmouth has ben an excellent host and the town has improved so much since I was last here.
“I have a brother who has such good childhood memories of Yarmouth, that he brings his children back here every year for a holiday.”
The magicians last used Yarmouth for their magical gathering in 1991, this year they filled the Britannia Pier, the Marina Centre and Hollywood Cinema for shows, trader meets, workshops, talks lectures, competitions, a dinner and more.
Jimmy Carlo, aka childrens entertainer Jimbo, from Wolverhampton, was also at the 1991 convention.
Jimbo, who won the stage competition in 1991, said: “It has been lovely, the ladies in red coats have been very helpful, I wish the land train went on for a bit longer, and could take us to our hotels at night! But apart from that it has been fabulous.
“I have some wonderful memories of Yarmouth as a child, I could talk about it for ever. I had holidays for 13 years in a row here, in Paget Road.
“The weather has been kind, in 1991 it pelted it down. I have no complaints. Hopefully it will return here soon. I love Great Yarmouth anyway, but it has improved so much.”
Jo Burch, stage name Jo Dimagico, a close-up magician from Nottingham, said: “Apart from the journey to get here it has been fantastic, I have heard no one complain about anything.
“For me it was about socialising and picking up tips from other performers, and the entertainment.
“I had never been before, I will be on a downer now, going back to normality.”
