Phone lines restored after fire at Norfolk BT phone exchange cuts off over 8,000 homes

The BT phone exchange in Chapel Street, Diss which was affected by the fire this morning

Phone lines have been restored to a number of homes which were cut off following a fire at the BT telephone exchange in Diss this morning.

Lines have been restored to Mellis, Botesdale and Diss after a fire at the exchange in Chapel Street cut lines to 8,562 homes in south Norfolk and north Suffolk.

Areas affected included Diss, Wymondham and as far afield as Bungay and Botesdale and the codes include 01379, 01953 and 01986.

Fire crews from East Harling, Harleston and Diss were called to the exchange in Chapel Street shortly after 9am and took an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze.
