A number of houses were evacuated in Halesworth in the early hours of this morning due to a bonfire blaze.

Police said that a bonfire which was believed to have been put out at a property in Old Station Road last night caught fire again overnight and spread to nearby sheds and fences.

Three fire engines were also called at 4.10am and several houses were evacuated for precautionary measures while crews tackled the out-of-control bonfire blaze.

There were no injuries or anyone trapped, police said.

The fire had been put out and brought under control by 5.15am.

A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman said: 'We were called to reports of sheds on fire. It is believed that a bonfire which someone had thought had been put out caught alight overnight and spread to fences and sheds.

'Police helped with the evacuation of a number of houses.'

There were no arrests and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

When asked for further details, a Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said they will release a statement later this morning.
