TWO males stole an elderly lady's purse from her home in Bradwell while pretending to look for a lost pet.

Police are appealing for information following the distraction theft from the lady's address in Sun Lane between 5.30pm and 6pm yesterday.

The pair called at the property asking the victim if they could search her garden for the dog they claimed to have lost.

The victim, who is in her 80s, obliged but later discovered one of the men in her bedroom.

The two made their excuses and left and the victim later noticed her purse containing a small amount of cash missing.

One of the offenders was described as white and being in his late 30s. The other was also white but aged 14 to 15.

Det Con Steve Moseley, Operation RADAR, urged other residents to be vigilant of such callers.

'Always be careful when someone approaches your home unexpectedly,' he said.

'Offenders often try to trick their way in. Remember to always put the door bar or chain on before you open the door and check the visitor's identity carefully.

'If in doubt, keep them out, particularly if you're on your own genuine callers will not mind if you ask them to make an appointment or come back later when someone else is around. If you are suspicious, report the incident to the police immediately.'
