Police were called to assist Ambulance crews dealing with an incident in St Peter's Road at about 6pm.

Henry Purnell, who is also known locally as Harry, was initially arrested for being drunk and disorderly and taken to Yarmouth Police Station.

The 77-year-old was later transferred to the James Paget Hospital at Gorleston on the advice of the force's medical officer where he remains in a critical condition.

Detectives investigating his injuries believe they were received as a result of a fall outside a post office in the town.
