One-year-old Bear was spooked by the sound of a gun firing while off his lead at Cranwich Heath, near Thetford, on Boxing Day.

His owner Button Wilde and her daughters Danielle, Demi and Jodi, along with local dog walkers, searched for hours over the next few days for the young dog.

However 15 minutes after joining the search on Thursday, December 28, Ms Wilde's other daughter Aimée and her husband Luke found the pooch curled up under a tree.

Ms Wilde had just arrived back at her house in Wereham, near Downham Market, after searching when she got the call at around 12.30pm.

'I was just in shock I just could not hold it together,' she said. 'I got back in the car again, leaving my door unlocked, and just went.

'Luke was sat with him and was talking to him. I crawled under the branches and because I had a woolly hat on Bear did not recognise me and he started grumbling.

'I have always called my dogs 'pup, pup, pup' and then he looked at me like he knew my face and then all of a sudden he recognised me. I could not cope and it all seems so dramatic now but it was so emotional.'

At 2.30pm on December 26 Bear, who is described as a people dog, ran off.

Ms Wilde and her daughters spent until 1am and in the pitch black searching for the small dog who only weights 2.5lbs.

Demi O'Shea said: 'I thought in the weather and temperatures he was not going to be alive any more. I said to my sister I thought he was done but I would not stop looking until my mum stopped.'

She added: 'It is still unbelievable and I still cannot believe he is alive. On the Tuesday morning we were out and it started sleeting and I just thought 'he can not survive this'.'

Bear was taken to the vets but was given the all clear.

He is now back home enjoying spending time back with his family and nine doggy friends.

'He is my mum's child,' said Miss O'Shea. 'We all moved out and she replaced us with the dogs. They are her world and she absolutely adores them. She would never have given up.'

The family expressed their gratitude to all who helped in the search for Bear.
