Outrage after man tries to put child on back of seal at Winterton-On-Sea for a photo

It is believed the man was attempting to take a photo of the child on the seal.

The incident was reported on Facebook by the official Winterton-On-Sea page, which said: 'We've been told a man had to be stopped from putting his child on the back of a seal at Winterton beach so he could take a picture. If this is the case, not only is it an act of gross stupidity, it shows a stunning lack of care for the tot's safety.'

The post reminded people that the seals are wild animals, they have a nasty bite and can become aggressive if they feel the need to defend themselves.

Evolutionary biologist Dr Ben Garrod from Great Yarmouth, shared the post commenting: 'Heartbreaking to read about such blatant disregard for the safety of not only the child but the poor seal pup. With the colony expanding what can be done to secure the safety of these wild animals?'

Many others took time to share their thoughts on the issue.

Maureen Stewart said on Facebook: 'Why do people not stick to the viewing areas, when we were there recently the beach was roped off.'

While Lorna Page wrote: 'I really do despair of people. Not all animals are fluffy, cuddly, tame pets. Goodness, whatever next? They'll be going to the zoo and putting their kids on the lions to take nice photos on the big pussy cats!'

Words of advice have since been issued to future visitors of the beach from the Winterton-On-Sea Facebook page.

These include taking heed of warning signs, keeping a safe distance from seals and not letting dogs or children approach them.

They added: 'There is plenty of room for us all to use the beach without causing distress to anyone - animal or human.'
