The Ormiston Academies Trust is looking to turn a second Gorleston school into an academy, a stone's throw from Ormiston Venture.

Herman Primary School, also in Oriel Avenue, could make the change under proposals agreed by Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove.

And the move - announced the week children begin their summer holidays - will be consulted on in the new school year.

Kate Rutherford, head teacher of Herman Primary, said: 'We have pledged to our parents that we will do our best for their children.

'We are confident that our recommendation of Ormiston Academies Trust as our sponsor will further strengthen Herman Primary School and are very much looking forward to working in partnership with the trust.'

Ormiston already sponsors Ormiston Venture Academy, Ormiston Victory Academy in Norwich and more recently Ormiston Denes Academy in Lowestoft.

The proposed Herman Primary academy, whose new name has yet to be revealed, would become part of the trust's national network of 24 academies. And bosses hope to make the change in the next academic year.

Professor Toby Salt, chief executive of Ormiston Academies Trust, said: 'We are delighted to be working with Herman Primary School on this exciting project - the school will be a valued member of our academy network. The trust has a long heritage of raising standards for children and we will be working closely with staff and students at Herman Primary to share the benefits that being in an academy group can offer.

'The trust network of schools collaborates to share good practice and expertise so we can provide the best educational opportunities for our young people. We already have some very successful academies in Norfolk, including Ormiston Venture which was recently rated as outstanding and will add its support to Herman Primary to ensure a seamless transition.'

A formal period of consultation will start in September to seek views from parents and the community. School governors recommended Ormiston to the minister for education this year.

Michael Gove has agreed in principle for Herman Primary School to become an academy sponsored by Ormiston, and the department's approval was given in a signed letter.

Ormiston chiefs say the conversion would allow the school to benefit from a sponsor's guidance and support to improve provision.

Ormiston Academies Trust is a charity and incorporated company which began sponsoring academies in 2006. It is part of Ormiston Trust, a charity founded in 1969 to help improve the life chances of young people.
