Children at a Norfolk school have a new classroom in the great outdoors – the Jubilee Room.

The 'gazebo' was officially opened at Old Buckenham Primary School's Jubilee celebrations on Friday – more good news after the school's recent Ofsted report.

Headteacher Paul Andrew said: 'It's been designed so a whole class can sit inside, but the children are also using it as a quiet place in break times and the teachers use it as a place to sit when they are doing environmental work as part of the curriculum.'

When the old 'gazebo' became unusable last year, the youngsters on the school council said it was something they really wanted replaced.

So they researched the costs and the Friends of Old Buckenham Primary School raised the funds. The building was designed for free by Martin Hall, and volunteer Don Crossman helped joiner Alan Fox to build it. So the whole project cost about a third of what had been expected.

Mr Andrew said: 'They've done a tremendous job. And the Friends of the school have been fantastic.'

The school was recently judged 'good' across the board, and praised by Ofsted for being a 'welcoming and highly inclusive school' where children with learning or physical disabilities were well supported.

Inspectors said the school was above average in reading, writing and mathematics, while provision for children in the reception class was 'outstanding'.

Mr Andrew said: 'We are proud of the fact that teaching across the whole school was judged as good or better. And I would particularly like to congratulate all our excellent pupils who were praised for their politeness, good behaviour and hard work.'

He added that they would be acting upon the inspectors' recommendations and adjusting the curriculum so it focused more sharply on the development of skills from year to year, and involved the children in planning their learning so it better reflected their interests and encouraged independent research and study.
